If Wishes Were Horses

She surprises him.

After years of coffee, cases, and corpses, Brennan still makes him sit up and blink.

She pokes and prods all his sensitive spots. Hell, she even compares him to a dog. But beneath her squint-speak beats a woman’s heart. Booth tries to never forget that.

He doesn’t have to try very hard. Not when her eyes shine with happiness because of a dog he knows she’ll never get to take home.

She’s one of the good guys; she deserves to have Ripley warming her lap while she reads her anthropology journals. But what people deserve and what they get aren’t always the same, he knows. So does she.

So he breaks the news and her heart, and this time there is no compartmentalizing – just him and her standing beside yet another grave, while she eulogizes a dog. Except she isn’t just talking about the dog, is she? Booth doesn’t need Sweets to tell him that.

They don’t talk much about Zack, but Booth sees his loss in her eyes and hears it in the words she speaks about poor Ripley and his master.

The world isn’t fair. Booth wishes it was – for Parker’s sake and for Brennan’s.

Damn it, I'm still teary. Good little fic, though.

Thank you. It was an excellent and sad ep.

Hey, love your icon, was wondering where you got it?

I made it out of a photograph from LaVidaMeSorprende.deviantART.com. You're welcome to it if you credit both of us. :)

Oh man, you are so in Booth's head.

Love this <3

Thanks, sweetie. It was a sad ep.... Those poor dogs.

Thank you. I know -- it was a sad ep, wasn't it?

Perfect...and exactly what I was thinking re: Zack during the eulogy. Lovely work.

Thank you. Yeah, I definitely read the eulogy as being about more than poor Ripley. But writers tend to have vivid imaginations, so who knows? *g*

amazing.. I won't cry again LOL :)
Definitely about Zack

Thanks, sweetie. *hands you a tissue* It was a heartfelt and sad episode.

Oh, wow... I didn't even catch the possible double meaning of her eulogy.

:(

Excellent post-ep fic.

Thanks very much!

Oh, wow... I didn't even catch the possible double meaning of her eulogy.

I don't write for the show, so who knows whether they intended to reference Zack as well or not. But I definitely read the scene that way.

Just plain beautiful.

You really know how to tug the ol' heartstrings.

(and the world should have been fair for Riley's sake, too *sigh*)

Thanks. :)

(and the world should have been fair for Riley's sake, too *sigh*)

Absolutely. Poor Ripley (and the other dogs) deserved much, much better.

I've just discovered your Bones fic, and I'm disappointed that I never saw it before now! This was so touching. You captured how I felt about the episode, and there's so much emotion and beauty in just those 200 words.

She’s one of the good guys; she deserves to have Ripley warming her lap while she reads her anthropology journals. But what people deserve and what they get aren’t always the same, he knows. So does she.

that was my favorite part. Ohh, it just broke my heart.

I love that you noticed the parallel between Ripley and Zack in Brennan's eulogy: I thought it was just me being a crazy Zack fan, so it was nice to see that someone else recognized that too.

Wow. I could go on, but I didn't mean to write you a mini-novel here, so I'm going to cut myself off. This was a wonderful read, and I'm looking forward to reading more of your work. :)

Excellent story. I'm still teary from the ep.

Thank you very much. And I know what you mean; it was a sad ep.

Oh, wow. Lovely little epilogue to the episode. I hadn't thought of the parallel with Zack, and now I am wondering why. Gorgeous.

You know how when you're playing with a puppy and you scritch em juuuust so and they do that little puppy wriggle of joy thing that they do? That's how your fic makes me feel :) Thank you for pointing out the subtext of Bones' eulogy, I can't believe I didn't catch it.

This is fabulous. You clever thing you... *twirls away still on a Bones-induced high*

So very much said, so few words, so well-done. (as always)

Those two actors - DB and ED - say so much without words; they've been working together so intensely these last 3-4 years, that we can understand their silences.

Poor Brennan: she finally opens her heart, and it gets broken...again. I feel her pain, and I want her -very, very, much - to have a companion that she loves openly, vulnerably, and without fear. [sigh.] I <3 her.

Man, that episode made me cry. A lot.

And then, you've written these beautiful words that I waited to read, and I cry some more.

Pretty.

Lovely fic, this ep was the best one yet this season. Great job. I always enjoy your stories. Just recently got an LJ account so now I can comment more. Your defintly one of my favorite Bones writers.

I love how you write in Booth's perspective. I love how he understands her and wants the best in the world for her ... I love that Booth tons more than goofy Booth. :)

I LOVE how you connected Zach with her little eulogy, makes me want to smack myself in the face for not noticing it when I watched the episode. Great job. :)

Hi, i'm new to lj and I just found your fics and I love it!!! you're a great writer!

can you add me?

Oh, this is so spot on! Nice job :)

Mind if I add a link at bones_ficrecs?

Thank you!

I am so glad I caught up on the show as I've been dying to read the fic that people have been posting (that's the wrong way round I thnk!)

Very good piece - the world isn't farfor these beloved characters you consistently betray so beautifully. My heart broke over the finale scene and your last 2 sentences.

aaww...that was just...aawww... *sniffle*

I adore sympathetic!Booth (and he does it so well!). Love the way Booth thinks in this fic: coneccting Ripley to Zack, Brennan to Parker. Booth sees the big picture. And Booth *most certainly* doesn't need Sweets to explain this stuff to him-rather the other way around. Love him for his undaunted wishing for a better world; in their line of work, cynicism is the easy way to deal.
