The First Cut Is the Deepest

"People are telling me that somehow all the credit went to the state police because of you. Is that possible?" she asks Jared.

He sighs and looks away, and she knows.

(So basically I’m a loser. Do you think I’m a loser?)

Booth's eyes catch the light in her mind, glass splintering under the force of her accusations.

Brennan's stomach burns as she forces back the bile flooding her throat. A solid presence looms between her and her partner now; if she had put out her hands, she knows she would have felt its jagged surface beneath her fingertips. She placed it there; she doesn't know how to remove it. The compulsion to fix this, to reassemble what she broke, is strong, stronger even than when she is faced with the bone confetti that is sometimes all that remains of the people who cross her path.

"You took advantage of him. You know, you made me think he’s a loser. And what really makes me angry is that I believed you. I wouldn’t blame Booth if he never spoke to me again.... You’re the loser."

That is the biggest lie. She is the loser.

She shoves Jared off his barstool.

Haha, I loved that scene. I mean, not because of her pain (which you captured excellently, by the way), but simply because she did something so juvenile as to push him off the stool. It was a classic Brennan moment.

ITA. Classic Brennan, who, emotionally, is still about 16.

Exactly that makd! Perfect insight!

Classic Brennan, who, emotionally, is still about 16.

Indeed!

Yep, it was definitely a classic Brennan moment. :)

Thanks for reading and commenting!

The compulsion to fix this, to reassemble what she broke, is strong, stronger even than when she is faced with the bone confetti that is sometimes all that remains of the people who cross her path. Wow, what a strong image; it holds up well to the depth of her feelings. In fact, it's a testament to them. (I don't know if that made any sense; I'm kinda loopy at the moment.)

You made perfect sense. *g* Thank you. Glad the imagery in this worked for you.

I couldn't wait to read your drabble for this episode and it was everything I hoped it would be. Love Brennan's inner thoughts here.

That is just such a nice thing to say; you made me feel very, very good. Thank you so much. ♥

As always, beautiful. Loved the jagged surface/fingertips bit, it really makes me think of skin and broken glass.

Sleep now.

Thanks a lot! Glad to know that image worked for you. :)

A solid presence looms between her and her partner now...

That whole paragraph just perfectly captured exactly the way I felt she would be thinking at that moment. She so often blunders around emotionally, stuffing things up, and not knowing how to make it right would be killing her.

I adored this. Absolutely friggin adored the ep *dances*

*sigh* The pain in her eyes, when she realizes... you captured that beautifully. I rewatched last night and when he sighs and turns away, and her mouth tightens as she realizes what she's done... I was wondering what she was thinking... and I think you got it exactly right.

Perfect (though, I wouldn't object AT ALL if that something a bit longer made it out of your head.) Thanks for sharing!

Yes yes yes, exactly! I love your imagry here. You did such a wonderful job of capturing her disappointment with herself and the damage she had done to her realtionship with Booth. Fanstastic1

Aww.... Thank you so very much!

Yeah go get him lol.

Nicely done :)

Anytime there is a powerful, emotional episode like Wednesday's, I hope you write something following it. ♥

She really does still have a long way to go before she can assess ordinary human beings needs and motives, viz the 'people do irrational things' remark in the SUV and Booth's response. You go there for her.

Loved it :D

Thank you :D

Thank you for reading and commenting. :)

Great take on Bones' thoughts during that scene! Very emotional.

Really liked it.

Thanks so much for commenting. I'm glad you felt this seemed true to Brennan's thoughts during that scene. :)

Lovely. You could see all of those things in her eyes.

Thanks very much.

You could see all of those things in her eyes.

I'm thrilled you thought so too.
