Participation Inequality: Lurkers vs. Contributors in Internet Communities
"In most online communities, 90% of users are lurkers who never contribute, 9% of users contribute a little, and 1% of users account for
almost all the action."

Among other things, I think this speaks to the issue of feedback for fanworks and even the output of those fanworks.  Very interesting reading.

It's an amazing country (Where else could an Arizona multimillionaire attack a Chicago South Sider as an elitist and hope to make it stick?)

Wow, thanks for that link to the BSG vids. Man, I'm getting nostalgic for it already and we haven't seen season 4.5 yet! So looking forwards to it and not at the same time, because then it will all be over. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

You're welcome. :) I've now watched through 3x15, but I'll be taking my time with the remaining eps, so the wait for the final season won't feel quite as long. *g* I'm sad it's ending...

I think it confirms what many people probably suspected in the first place -- you have a few folks producing content/participating openly, and the vast majority silently partaking.

It is why I refuse to say things like "so-and-so creator should listen to the fans" or "I'll only post X's followup after 20 comments."

I hear ya. Both statements, especially the latter because I find it more personally relevant, annoy the hell out of me. While I definitely wish the amount of feedback was more proportional to the number of hits/reads, blackmailing people for feedback is dumb, irritating, and probably counterproductive. Personally, I find it pretty offensive and will never do it myself.

Glad you enjoyed the vid. I've only seen through 3x15, so everything's spoilery for me. *g* It's a great show; I'm sad to know it's ending.

Some great links, dear. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome. :) Happy reading.

If you liked the Dead Letter Office, you may enjoy looking through LJ's lettergraveyard.

Oooh, thanks for the link! I will definitely check it out.

That "Participation Inequality" link is pretty dead on. I'm an administrator for a few rather large message boards (off LJ) and communities (on LJ) and I totally see those stats being played out every day.

I used to play on a site called Neopets from 2002-2006 and lurking was my thing. I lurk a lot on ONTD and certain communities. I post when I find a reason too and not to just post. I am a full on lurker on some things. For awhile I read your fics and never commented and then decided to comment :)
