"If God appeared to you..."
"If God appeared to you in a series of vivid and moving dreams and told you to leave everything behind, travel to the Red Sea and become a fisherman, what would you do?  What if you were told to sacrifice your child?" - Taken from The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock, Ph.D.

My answers:

1)  Say "Hell no," and check to see if I'd been smoking crack in my sleep.
2)  Tell God to go to hell.

No offense intended to those who would answer differently.

So what would you do?

I'm really glad you responded; I was curious how someone who IS devout might think about this. It's a tough proposition! *g*

With the proviso that I've reached my thinky thought quota already today, off the top of my head, I'd say it depends. If God sent the hotass angel from SPN, I might consider fishing as an alternative career choice, but would definitely pass on the child sacrifice, hotass angel or no. DNW baby killing. :(

I may be down with building an ark though. Projects are fun.

I totally agree. Building an ark, I can handle. Let me know if He commands you to, I'd be glad to throw in a helping hand!

I could fold you a bunch of little origami animals. in pairs of course. that way, when the floodwaters subsided, there'd still be some dry paper.

you're rockin the castiel!love? I know a bunch of people are, but I just don't see it.

...I need to make more spn icons that don't involve food. :)

I have no suitable origami icons so you have surprise!jdm instead. Because everyone needs surprise!jdm in their lives.

Origami animals are an excellent plan. You can be on my boat. Plz to be bringing a nautical themed pashmina afghan with you too.

I'm kinda meh on Castiel - he had an awesome entrance but I need him to do something cool now. The guy who plays him is kinda legendary though - he does yoga, interned at the White House, goes on Buddhist retreats, writes poetry and built all the furniture in his house. Hence the love. :)

*g* We'll talk SPN once I'm caught up. Castiel sounds like an interesting character.

LMAO. I love you, Bertie.

GET CAUGHT UP. The power of Capslock compels you. (Either that or I will come round and make you watch, as I am apparently planning to do to people all summer. *glee*) :)

Castiel is interesting but the guy who plays him is called Misha Collins and I'm now stuck between thoughts of Misha = hotass angel and Misha = ADORABLE MINI LERDO. *flails*

And I love you too. You can be on my hypothetical ark. *nods sincerely*

Been turning this one over in my head. While I respect people's faith, blind faith is dangerous. People not thinking for themselves or following orders or rules without thinking is dangerous.

Watched a documentary once where a religious scholar said the words of God must never be questioned - chilling, that's how fanatics are created and come on, what's the quality of his academic work if he doesn't question things?!

Some might say if you have faith and ability to trust you'd do it, but still, I'd never.

and come on, what's the quality of his academic work if he doesn't question things?!

I ♥ U

You're too sweet :)

My father influenced me to adopt a scholarly approach to religion.

Totally agree with you. :) And what a lucid and thoughtful response. Thanks for replying.

I think I'd require a lot more proof that this person or thing who appeared in my dreams was actually "god". And who's god, exactly? the Catholic god? the Muslim god? Buddha? My god, that I don't believe in? I might accept it as a vision that I should look into believing in god once again but I don't think I'd ever trust my dreams to dictate my life, no matter who they featured.

Being a believer in free will, I will freely decline the offers. If I am then struck by lightning I am free to repent for my decision for eternity, somewhere.

Not moving, not sacrificing my child. Head to psych. department and ask colleague to check out my brain, 'cause I may have lost it.

I'd tell God that his/her word is no valid and empty for me, asking someone to kill animals is just cruel.

Or your 'Go to hell' choice is very appealing to me. :)

Anyway, I wouldn't listen. Unless I'm asked to give him/her my dessert, like Lisa Simpson. *g*

ETA: There's a movie that I love called Commandments about a man whose life starts getting better when he loses his faith and start breaking the commandments one by one. Once he says: "To hell with God", your number 2 made me remember that. Minute 5:45 more or less.

LMAO. I'd do pretty much the same as you, babe. In fact, as I read the paragraph I was thinking 'Assume I'd been at the Absinth in my sleep again.' ;)

Thought alot about this one. I'd like to think that my faith is so strong I would say yes to anything God asked of me. Very thought-provoking question though.

it's a difficult question. I certainly wouldn't agree right off the bat (to the first one), I'd have to do some serious debating. knowing that I would have wifi there would help. :)

and to the second one, I would debate how breaking one of god's big commandments and killing the most innocent and beloved of his/her creations could possibly fit into god's will.

Answer in the same vein as you, possibly using a bit stronger language.

I'd also have a really hard time believing it really was God.

LOL About all I would do is spend the day telling people what bizarre, freaking dreams I'd been having.

Sorry, but I'm not exactly a shining pillar of faith. *shrugs*

Wow...that was certainly tough. I'm a Christian, but I do believe there's a lot of free will within God's will and so I'd probably say no. I really couldn't see God asking for that in the first place.

Whose (G)od? I have many gods. Which one?

As a Jew I'd tell G-d to leave me alone. (It's our stock in trade all through the bible.)

1. "GIVE ME A REALLY GOOD REASON AND I'LL CONSIDER IT!" would be my first response

2. OK....."NOOOOOOO With a side of F**K YOU," would be my next response
