Lie to Me Drabble: My Kingdom for a Carton of Pudding

Title: My Kingdom for a Carton of Pudding
Characters: Cal Lightman, Gillian Foster
K or PG
Through 1x1: Pilot
Timeline: Set sometime during the Pilot.
Word Count: 100 (It was very hard to pare this back to 100 words.)
Lie to Me and its characters belong to FOX, not me. This story is purely meant to entertain. No copyright infringement is intended.
Summary: Her relentless happiness defies understanding. A Cal-centric drabble.
Author Note: This is my first foray into Lie to Me fic. I watched the first episode last night and had a tiny idea hatch around 5:00 this morning when I was listening to the baby on the monitor and hoping she would fall back asleep for a while. I purposely avoided reading any fic in this fandom before writing this; I didn't want to get spoiled or unconsciously piggyback off another author's characterization of Cal. Anyway, since I've only watched one ep so far, my characterization could be completely off. If it is, I apologize.

Thanks for reading, and if you leave feedback, thanks for that as well. Concrit is always welcome.

My Kingdom for a Carton of Pudding

He knows when she’s lying: she did it ten minutes ago when he asked if she was tired.

But her relentless happiness defies understanding. It doesn't make sense; she sees many of the same things he does -- the denial, deceit, and death.

Maybe it's the mammoth orange slushies she drinks, long, red straw poised between her lips.

But they're too conspicuous.

Cal buys JELL-O chocolate pudding instead and secrets it back to his office, concealed inside layers of grocery bags. Door closed, they face off, mano a pudding.

Into the trash it goes.

Whimsy, pudding, and Gillian Foster -- perhaps none are meant for him.

I'm so happy you've found this fandom and this show! Brilliant, no? And I love this little introspection piece.

And random about baby monitors: I have a 2 month old at home and I know ALL about the monitor watch, waiting, listening and hoping the wee munchkin falls back to sleep. Especially after that 3am feeding! Maybe I should start writing fic while I wait...? lol!

*waves hello* Hi there! Sorry it's taken me a bit to respond to you. Thanks for adding me; I added you back and am looking fwd to getting to know you better.

Thanks for commiserating with me. :) Babies are wonderful, but they do leave their parents rather bleary-eyed at times, don't they?

Especially after that 3am feeding! Maybe I should start writing fic while I wait...? lol!

Hey, if you can manage it, go for it. Multitasking for the win!
