Booth drew it himself--that solid black line between them--intending to permanently separate "you" and "me" from the risky territory of "us."

But what does the human heart know of geometry, geography, or cartography?

It knows blood, like his fingertips know the rasp of dried blood and Technicolor bruises blooming obscenely on her pale skin.

It knows fear, as time slows down and speeds up, sucking the air from his lungs as surely as it devours the air in her metal prison.

And it knows envy, that cardinal sin, as Booth stands frozen, watching through her office window with wide eyes while she kisses another man.

Sully has dark hair and dark eyes, and he carries a badge just like he does. But he isn't him.

Booth's feet move because he forces them to, taking him away from the lab that bustles with his people. Unfortunately, the physical distance doesn't do anything for the unwanted afterimage branded into his retinas.

Brennan's happiness matters; he's glad she's finally doing something besides staring at moldy old bones, isn't he?

As Booth steps outside, a bitter smile twists his lips. God must exist; no one else could have this perfect a sense of irony.

Author's Note: Tell me you didn't want to hug Booth when you saw the look on his face during the last scene of The Bodies in the Book.

Sully has dark hair and dark eyes, and he carries a badge just like he does. But he isn't him.

- Wah!

That scene gets me every time. Him with his little file - poor Booth. A definite hug him moment.

I loved this to pieces:

It knows blood, like his fingertips know the rasp of dried blood and Technicolor bruises blooming obscenely on her pale skin.

It knows fear, as time slows down and speeds up, sucking the air from his lungs as surely as it devours the air in her metal prison.

And it knows envy, that cardinal sin, as Booth stands frozen, watching through her office window with wide eyes while she kisses another man.

Btw, gorgeous header for this one too x

Oh, that scene breaks my heart every time.

I like this a lot. Especially:

It knows blood, like his fingertips know the rasp of dried blood and Technicolor bruises blooming obscenely on her pale skin.

As Booth steps outside, a bitter smile twists his lips. God must exist; no one else could have this perfect a sense of irony.

Very nice!

Thanks very much. :) I agree that it's a heartbreaking scene. *sigh* Booth's a stubborn fool.

I wanted to hug him for sure..

That little header hurts a little to see :/ xD Well.. he's gone xD

One scene that hurts me a lot.. even more than that one is the one in 2x16 - Boneless Bride in the River - when Brennan tells him that Sully asked her to go with him and she needs to know what to do.. and Booth's face.. priceless.. my heart tightened so baad..

Well.. it was a little OT xD.. about your fic? Amazing! To the list of my Top 10 Lerdo fics :D

Sara, I totally agree with you about that scene in 2x16 being even more painful. Oh, his heart was clearly breaking, but he wanted her to be happy, so he told her she should go. *gulp*

Not at all off-topic, my dear! I enjoyed it. :)

Thank you, as always.

But what does the human heart know of geometry, geography, or cartography?

That sentence makes my heart ache. You really know how to write these moments!

Elena,
Thank you. That's the beautiful and awful thing--Booth wants (or thinks he wants) to keep their relationship in this neat little box. But then there's his heart--and it won't obey the dictates of his brain.

awww! Gosh, I seriosly wanted to hug him! Now after reading this and seeing your graphic, I just want to hug him even more. :(

I know; that's a tough scene. There's such naked pain on Booth's face as he watches Brennan and Sully together.

Thanks for reading and commenting on this; I appreciate it. :)

Poor Booth. It makes me sad.

Doesn't your heart just break for him? :(

Since everyone else already quoted my favorite lines (which was pretty much the whole thing), I'll just say no one capture Booth's breaking heart better than you.

Oh his hurt little face. I do want to hug Booth, that's for sure.
I've been reading your recent drabbles, and as always you're doing an amazing job, but I like this episode, and this scene breaks me every time, so this one goes to my favorites.
*hugs*

Thanks, Foxy. I know. He just looks so forlorn and frustrated and jealous, and you just want to hug him.

God must exist; no one else could have this perfect a sense of irony.

*meep*

Perfect.

Thank you, Witchy. *pets sad, noble Booth*

I WANTED TO HOLD HIM TIGHTLY ALL NIGHT LONG AND TELL HIM IT WOULD BE OK. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH. <3

I love, love, love this particular drabble. The style is so pretty. The title really sums it up quite well.

God must exist; no one else could have this perfect a sense of irony.
But y'all will get together in time, so don't be sad my lovely Seeley! She loves you but she just doesn't know it.

PS. Is it just me, or would you kill for a voiceover type episode to know what they're thinking? I'd love to get into Brennan's head.

LOL at your comments, Sarah. :)

It's not just you; if they did it well, a voice-over could be fascinating.

Thank you for reading and commenting!

I love the 'cartography' spin on the idea of the line. So many people just refer to as a line drawn in the sand, or whatever.

And I so did want to leap through my screen to rip Sully and Brennan apart and make Booth come back! I think that's why the scene at the end of "The Boneless Bride in the River" gets me so much, with Booth standing there as the camera comes into focus. He's always there. She just has to turn around and see him.

The whole concept of a line is just fun to play with. :)

He's always there. She just has to turn around and see him.

So much yes! This comment of yours has really stuck with me. It's a matter of them seeing what's been right under their noses for a while now. ;)

Thanks for commenting--and for making me think.

I'm probably the only one who liked Sully (besides Brennan)...

That's definitely not true; I've seen other people bring the Sully love at various Bones comms. I thought his personality was kind of annoying, but I didn't have a problem with him dating Brennan. If he'd stuck around and made her happy, more power to him. I'm not one of those people who thinks Booth or Brennan seeing other people is a crime against nature. *g*

Love this, love this, love this. It's so very revealing, so true: his desire to see her happy results in his not being happy at all.

And Yesssss! I did want to hug Booth at the end of TBitB. (But, of course, I want to hug him a lot....) :-)

I love this line, especially: God must exist; no one else could have this perfect a sense of irony.

Poor Booth . Beautifully written as usual
Thank you ;)

Yeah, this wasn't a happy moment for Booth. :(

I'm glad you enjoyed reading this. Thanks for commenting!
